In a recent episode of Panhandle Live!, Lee O'Neill, founder of the Brian O'Neill Jr. Foundation, joined to discuss the organization's mission to empower youth and prevent suicide. Established in 2019 the foundation focuses on promoting inner strength and resilience among young people. Lee shared insights into their collaboration with the national program Sources of Strength, which emphasizes eight protective factors: family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality, physical health, and mental health. Through training sessions in schools across Berkeley and Jefferson counties, the foundation equips peer leaders to identify and utilize these strengths, fostering a supportive community for students facing emotional challenges.
During the interview, Lee highlighted the importance of making mental health resources accessible and reducing the stigma associated with seeking help. She discussed initiatives like creating videos to demystify contacting crisis lines such as 988, aiming to encourage more students to reach out in times of need. Additionally, Lee announced the upcoming "Stronger with Each Step" 5K Color Run, scheduled for April 27th at Sam Michael Park. This annual event not only raises awareness about mental health but also brings the community together in a vibrant celebration, with each color station representing a different strength from the Sources of Strength program. The foundation's dedication to empowering youth and fostering open conversations about mental health continues to make a significant impact in the Panhandle region.
